Think of it this way: the motor does about half the work, and you do the other half. You stay in control of the speed, the direction, and when to use the assist. Most riders pick it up within minutes.

There are two main types of electric bikes.

Hawaii Ebike Rules Every First-Timer Should Know

Hawaii updated its ebike laws in 2025, and there are a few rules that matter a lot for tourists on Oahu.

Here's what you need to know before you ride:

• You must be at least 15 years old to operate an ebike in Hawaii.

• Riders under 18 are required to wear a helmet. Honolulu's 2025 ordinance (Ord. 25-006) extends this to anyone under 18.

• All ebikes must have a motor of 750 watts or less. Our bikes fall within that limit.

• The motor can only assist up to 20 mph. You can pedal faster, but the motor cuts off at that speed.

• Sidewalk riding is banned in business districts, which includes Waikiki and Downtown Honolulu.

• Outside business districts, sidewalk riding is allowed at 10 mph or less, with the requirement to yield to pedestrians and signal before passing.

Where Can You Legally Ride an Ebike on Oahu?

You can ride on public roads, bike lanes, and designated multi-use paths. The routes we recommend keep you on legal, well-traveled paths the entire time.

What you can't do is ride on natural surface hiking trails or off-road areas managed by the State Division of Forestry and Wildlife. Ebikes are motor-assisted vehicles, and trail access rules reflect that.

The Best Beginner Ebike Routes to Try on Oahu

Oahu has some of the most scenic road riding in the country, and you don't have to go far from Waikiki to experience it.
